RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

All directives outlined in the Natural Selection Element Briefing Rules of Engagement are provided to give the participants involved a safe and honorable combat simulation environment.  An asterisk ( * ) indicates this rule applies directly to BHC members. However, non-BHC troops should be aware of the rule as well as it may affect them indirectly.

The 3 most essential rules to remember are:

1. KEEP YOUR EYE PROTECTION ON
Approved eye protection must be worn at all times while in the chronograph & target range and while on the battlefield. If you take your eye protection off in these areas you are risking the loss of an eye. Any soldier that is found not wearing eye protection in these areas will be immediately removed from the simulation. If this happens twice the soldier will be removed permanently from the simulation without refund. While on the battlefield, if you must clean your eye protection, do not remove it. Wipe the outside off with your gloves, shirtsleeve, a handkerchief or a clean soft rag. Never lift the eye protection and wipe the inside. If they can't be wiped and/or your vision is impaired, then leave the battlefield or call for assistance in leaving the battlefield. If your eye protection comes off, comes loose from the frame, comes loose at the strap or lens cracks on the field, place your hands over your eyes, drop to the ground, call out: "EMERGENCY!" and yell for assistance. Do not look up. Anyone assisting must hover over the soldier until he gets the eye protection on and/or is escorted off the battlefield. Never shoot at anyone who is not wearing approved eye protection.

2. REMOVE THE MAGAZINE FROM THE WEAPON, DISCHARGE ANY CHAMBERED ROUNDS, TURN THE SELECTOR TO SAFE AND PUT IN PLACE THE BARREL BLOCKING DEVICE.
Magazines should be removed, selectors should be on safe and barrel blocking devices should be in place while in the staging and parking areas, before and after chronographing and target shooting in the chronograph & target range and before and after the simulation on the battlefield. If you leave your magazine engaged, the weapon in fire mode and fail to put in place the barrel-blocking device in these areas and/or at these times you are risking accidental discharge of your weapon. Any soldier found with a magazine engaged, a weapon not selected to safe and/or a weapon without a barrel-blocking device in place in these areas and/or at these times will be warned. If this happens twice the soldier will be removed permanently from the simulation without refund.

3. NO DISCHARGING OF WEAPONS EXCEPT INSIDE THE CHRONOGRAPH & TARGET RANGE AND ON THE BATTLEFIELD.
Weapons should not be discharged in the staging or parking areas. This also means no discharging blank shots. If you discharge your weapon in these areas you are risking accidentally shooting a soldier who is not wearing eye protection. Any soldier found discharging his weapon in these areas will be warned. If this happens twice the soldier will be removed permanently from the simulation without refund.

Other important rules and procedures of play:

Any soldier not abiding by or abusing these rules will be dismissed by EAG Combat Simulations staff without refund.

ADMINISTRATIVE

EAG reserves the right to decline or accept any person as a participant in any simulation at any time, including prior to initiation or during a simulation.

All participants must sign a waiver and read/watch/listen to all rules and procedures of play before simulations can begin.

All participants must be 18 years of age or older. Participants under 18 must have guardian consent.

The possession and use of alcohol and drugs is prohibited. Persons suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be dismissed from the simulation without refund.

No troops may enter the battlefield on Friday nor on Saturday before the simulation begins. Troops also may not enter the battlefield during the ceasefire phases of the simulation.

Props and identification devices may not be altered in any way.

EQUIPMENT

Only EAG approved equipment is allowed. Firearms, knives, and explosives are strictly forbidden.

Observe all safety rules applicable to firearms when handling Airsoft weapons or other devices capable of launching projectiles.

RADIO COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT

Radio communication equipment is authorized for use.

Use of jamming equipment is prohibited.

Scanning is not prohibited.

EYE PROTECTION

Our insurance requires us to tell you that facemasks with ear protection or balaclavas are required.

Facemasks with ear protection or balaclavas are required for all players under 18.

All goggles must meet the following requirements:

1.       Polycarbonate lens construction that meets or exceeds ANSI Z87.1 or ANSI Z80.3 standards.

2.       Goggles must set securely against your face. No gaps that a bb could pass through may be present.

Mesh goggles are no longer permitted due to the possibility of debris from simulated concussion grenades.

WEAPON VELOCITY

All troops intending to use their own equipment must report to the chronograph & target range before signing in.

Velocities and corresponding engagement distances are as follows:

Three shot average of 0-300 with.25g: Targets may be engaged on full or semi auto at any distance (except point blank).

Three shot average of 301-350 with.25g: Targets that are farther than 25' may be engaged on full or semi auto. Targets that are within 25' may be engaged with a single shot, below the shoulders.

Three shot average of 351-400 with.25g: Targets that are farther than 50' may be engaged on full or semi auto. Targets that are within 50' may be engaged with a single shot, below the shoulders.

Any soldier found not abiding by or abusing these standards will be removed permanently from the simulation without refund, no warnings.

BOUNDARY

The active battlefield is the area that lies inside the yellow rope. Please inform us if you see a break in the boundary rope.

No soldier may move outside the perimeter of the active battlefield. Troops that travel out of bounds during play are automatically eliminated.

Troops that travel out of bounds unintentionally should fall prone just inside the location where the breach occurred and remain there for 30 minutes.

Troops may not shoot out of bounds or through the boundaries into other areas of play.

STRUCTURES

Participants who use any structures such as the compound buildings and in-ground fighting positions, do so at their own risk.

No participants may occupy the sniper tower. Participants that do so will be removed permanently for the day without refund.

No participants may ascend or descend the compound buildings in any way other than the steps provided.

INITIATION AND CESSATION

Simulation evolutions start and stop with a horn blow.

Troops can stop the simulation in a case of emergency. Troops can call out: "EMERGENCY!" if there is an injury or someone's eye protection is off. During an EMERGENCY, all troops must stop play.

No faking of injuries. This is not an acceptable tactic.

COVER

No rearranging the field in any way or building of barricades.

No soldier may take with him into the battlefield or fashion while there, an object designed to function as a shield against being hit.

SHOOTING THE ENEMY

Blind shooting at close range is disallowed.

Headshots count. However we discourage shooting at the head, neck and groin areas. No soldier may intentionally shoot at any other soldier's head or face. Repeats will be removed permanently from the simulation without refund.

NEUTRALITY

A neutrality symbol would be a weapon held above the head.

A soldier is emphatically disallowed from shooting at any other soldier showing a neutrality symbol, any non-soldier or any wildlife.

Active troops that fire upon respawning troops who do not clearly display the neutrality signals and procedures cannot be held accountable.

Eliminated troops, staff members, or spectators cannot be used as cover or shields.

Casualty Collection Point (CCP)

Element Commanding Officers will be issued (1) flag with a red cross affixed, (1) clipboard with his element's roster and (1) pen.  These three items will form his element's Casualty Collection Point (CCP).

Element Commanding Officers may not position their CCP within 50 ft of any structure nor within 100 ft of any known objective during that evolution.  Element Commanding Officers may move their CCP before the start of each evolution.

Eliminated troops should not shoot on the way to their element's CCP, as this will distract and confuse active troops. This also means no discharging blank shots.

All eliminated troops visiting their element's CCP must sign in on the CCP clipboard.

When leaving the CCP, resurrected troops should make their way to their element's current defensive area for re-deployment.

GETTING SHOT

Rounds that ricochet and hit do not count.

A soldier that shoots himself or is shot by his own teammate is considered KIA.

If two troops hit each other simultaneously, both troops are considered KIA.

If a soldier's weapon is hit, it is considered useless until it is taken to his force's CCP.

Any soldier caught ignoring a hit during play will be considered KIA and will be warned. If this happens twice the soldier will be removed permanently from the simulation without refund.

HITS

Standard Troops: Non-Battle Honor Corps troops are killed by any hit on their person or their equipment.

*Battle Honor Corps (BHC) Troops: BHC troops have earned the privilege of using a health point system.

The BHC member starts an operation with 10 health points.  Health points are deducted as hits are taken.

Headshot: automatic 10 health points deduction

Shoot: no

Move: no

Communicate: no

Torso shot: 8 health points deduction

Shoot: handgun in non-dominate hand only

Move: slow crawl only

Communicate: quietly only

All other hits: 4 health points deduction

Shoot: with non-wounded hand/arm only

Move: with non-wounded foot/leg only

Communicate: yes

Every hit, within a burst of hits, must be counted.  One burst of hits does not equal one hit.

*BODY ARMOR

BHC troops wearing replica ballistic vests modified to weigh 16 lbs. or more may ignore hits to the vest.

BHC troops wearing replica ballistic plates modified to weigh the documented weight of an actual ballistic plate of similar size may ignore the corresponding number of hits to the plate that the actual ballistic plate is rated for.

BHC troops wearing replica ballistic helmets may ignore one hit to the helmet.  A second hit is considered fatal.

Every hit, within a burst of hits, must be counted.  One burst of hits does not equal one hit.

Troops who take hits while wearing body armor should realistically simulate the effects of taking hits to body armor.

*MEDICS

Each element squad including one or more BHC troops will have the option to designate one individual as the medic for the simulation.

The medic may carry designated wound dressings and apply them to wounded BHC troops.

Only the designated medic may carry the designated wound dressings and administer medical attention.

Wounds that are dressed by the medic regain their health points but do not regain their use.  Head wounds are not treatable.

Both treated and untreated chest wounded troops die from their wounds if they are not evacuated to the CCP within an hour of receiving the wound.

Used wound dressings may not be re-used and must be returned to the staging area.

CLOSE QUARTERS COMBAT (CQC)

Troops may “CQC kill” other troops with replica knives or with their bare hands.

CQC kill with replica knife: gently touch the knife to the victim’s head or neck region.

One touch kills any victim instantly.

*All other wounds caused by a replica knife count the same as hits from a BB.

CQC kill with bare hands: gently touch both hands to the victim’s head or neck region.

One touch kills any victim instantly.

KIA

Dead troops should not raise their arms and call out that they’ve been hit.

To more realistically simulate dying on the battlefield, troops should fall prone where they are and remain there for 30 minutes.  The soldier should then rise, hold his weapon above his head and report to his element's CCP.  Once the KIA soldier has signed in at his CCP, he is considered resurrected and should return to his element's defensive area for re-deployment.

Active troops that walk with KIA troops automatically become KIA troops.

Dead troops may not shoot, move or communicate in any way.  Any who do might be mistaken for living adversaries and fired upon.

Dead troops should leave their eye protection on. Never assume that everyone knows the simulation is over or hears the horn.

No "liberating" of weapons and/or equipment from dead troops unless consent is verbally expressed beforehand.

Engarian Currency may be liberated from dead troops.

Engarian Currency may only be carried in the upper arm pockets of a BDU jacket, the lower front pockets of a BDU jacket, the leg bellow type pockets of BDU pants or the pockets located on the side of the calves of BDU pants.

Unused wound dressings may be liberated from dead medics.

Unused wound dressings may be only be carried by the medic in the lower two pockets of a BDU jacket or the two leg bellow type pockets of BDU pants.

CASUALTY EVACUATION -- ACCELERATED RESPAWN

Casevacs may be used during operations to respawn dead or wounded troops more quickly.

*Wounded troops whose wounds allow them to easily move to their element's CCP on their own may do so.

*Wounded troops whose wounds do not allow them to easily move to their element's CCP on their own (chest wounds, both feet/legs wounded) can be carried to their element's CCP.

Dead troops must be carried to their element's CCP.  Dead troops must not assist their rescuer in any way.

Troops that are not comfortable with being moved should inform their element leaders. Element leaders should not call for these individuals to be moved when they are wounded or killed.

STAGING AREA

To enter the staging area, troops must exit the perimeter of the active battlefield within 10 feet of a staging area entrance.  No soldier may travel outside the perimeter of the active battlefield for any other operational reason.

All troops entering the staging area must clearly show the staff member that his weapon has been made safe.

To leave the staging area and re-enter the perimeter of the active battlefield, troops must use neutrality symbols.  Neutrality symbols cannot be used to move towards objectives or enemy positions.

*LEAVE NO MAN BEHIND

BHC members must display their BH beads prominently.

BHC members can take possession of the BH beads of enemy dead or wounded.

BHC members cannot take possession of BH beads of friendly dead or wounded.

ENEMY PRISONERS OF WAR

Troops should ask opponents within 20ft to surrender, but they are not required to respond. If they do respond that they surrender they may be taken prisoner.

Captured enemy troops are worth points. In the event of a capture, captors should deliver the EPW, unharmed, to the staging area within 30 minutes of capture.

Weapons and/or equipment may be taken from EPWs but may not be tampered with and must be returned upon release.

*BHC members can take possession of the BH beads of enemy captured.  They may retain these BH beads only if the EPW is delivered, unharmed, to the staging area within 30 minutes of capture.

*BHC members who lose their BH beads due to being captured will be reimbursed the amount lost by BHC Command.

SAFE WORDS

Combat simulation sometimes involves interaction that, when portrayed realistically, may cause discomfort.  Troops that are involved in physical confrontation during operations (i.e. taken prisoner/hostage) may use safe words to adjust or end the interaction.

Safe word “RED – All interaction must cease immediately.

Safe word ”YELLOW – Intensity of the interaction needs to decrease.

Safe word ”GREEN – Interaction is acceptable.

It is important to understand that once a troop has used the safe word "RED" he has announced himself as compliant and he must remain compliant for the rest of the mission and/or operation.

VEHICLES

EAG approved vehicles may be used in certain operations.

Only EAG authorized individuals may operate vehicles used on the battlefield.

The vehicle may not travel any faster than 5 mph.

When riding in a vehicle, always keep hands and feet inside the vehicle until it comes to a complete stop.

The driver and passenger side windows must remain rolled up only high enough to protect the exterior mirrors (which should always be turned in).

All other windows must be rolled down completely at all times.

If an improvised explosive devices (IED) explosion occurs within 10 feet of the vehicle, it is considered immobilized.

IEDS & GRENADES

Several trip wire improvised explosive devices (IED) will have been employed on the battlefield prior to the start of the simulation.

An explosion caused by an EAG approved IED kills any troops within 10 feet of the detonation.

An explosion caused by an EAG approved simulated concussion grenade, occurring in open terrain, kills any troops within 10 feet of the detonation.

An explosion caused by an EAG approved simulated concussion grenade, occurring in closed quarters, kills any troops within the closed quarters.

Hits caused by an EAG approved simulated fragmentation grenade/device count the same as hits from a weapon.

HONOR

Troops with tempers should leave them at home. Troops may not contact or grab anyone in an aggressive manner.

Troops may not aggressively touch anyone or cause anyone to fall. Violation of this rule is cause for immediate and permanent removal without refund.

No unsportsmanlike conduct, arguments, threats, racial or personal derogatories, abusive or foul language, taunting, provoking, obscene gestures, or verbal aggression is allowed.

Troops reported to be shouting “YOU'RE HIT!” or similar phrases at other troops will be considered to be displaying aggressive behavior and will be warned. If this happens twice the troops will be removed permanently from the simulation without refund.

When in doubt, call yourself out.

Always give your opponent the benefit of the doubt.

PHYSICAL

If a soldier is out of shape or get too hot, he should pace himself. Take up a defensive position and rest. The action will eventually come to the soldier. The simulation can be more physically demanding than troops may be used to. Troops with heart conditions or other ailments should have a physician's OK to play.

Airsoft is an inherently dangerous activity, requiring significant physical exertion. Participation in Natural Selection carries inherent risks that cannot be eliminated. Risks include, but are not limited to, minor injuries (such as scratches, bruised or strained muscles and ligaments), major injuries (such as loss of eyesight, joint or back injuries, heart attacks and concussions), and catastrophic injuries (such as paralysis or death).   All Natural Selection participation is voluntary. Participants knowingly assume all such risks.

GENERAL

Trash must not be left on the field, on the chronograph & target range or in the staging or parking areas. Please place all trash in the appropriate trashcans located in the staging area.

National, regional and local laws apply.

REALISM FIRST, SAFETY ALWAYS.

The preceding rules are designed to provide safe and more realistic combat simulation.  If at any point during the day’s operations you encounter a situation not covered by these rules, remember:  “Realism First, Safety Always” and use the following criterion to assist in your decision how to react:

  1. What is the most realistic response?  What would happen in real life?

  1. Is this response safe? What is the most realistic response that is still safe?

  1. Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

Keep in mind, this combat simulation was planned for those of us who desire a more intelligent, challenging and realistic level of participation and interaction than the standard “Airsoft” event provides.  This is a thinking man’s game.
